OUR HISTORY
Film Society was originally known as "Production Club" when it first began on the SDSU Campus, and was comprised of a small group of aspiring filmmakers for networking and production integration. The organization was founded in 2014 by President Daniel Galuppo and Vice-President Dave Wilwayco. Both members and their administration created the Film Society Film Festival, a showcase open to all pre-majors and majors to present short films in a festival setting. Galuppo and Wilwayco served 2 subsequent terms in office before selecting Marissa Roxas, another founding member as the next President. Peter Cirino was named club adviser after the organization obtained RSO Status, but it was lost after the club dissolved.
The club was then revived by President Marissa Roxas and Vice-President Alex Lalangan in 2016, where she held the office of President of Film Society until 2017. Roxas took major steps in solidifying the club on campus as an A.S. Recognized Organization. Jerry La took over as the 3rd FS Vice-President in Roxas' second term. Roxas served 3 terms as Film Society President and was the first female President in Film Society history. Roxas most notably created a brand for the club, grew the membership, eliminated membership fees, and rolled out merchandise for the organization. Roxas lifted the club from debt and turned it into a profitable organization through the popularity of the festivals. Roxas departed after her graduation in 2017.
Jerry La was elected as Film Society's 3rd President and Anthony Grimm was elected as the club's 4th Vice-President in December 2017. Both assumed their respective offices on January 8, 2018. In December 2018, the club held the most popular and highest attending film showcase in the club's history, nearly selling out the Don Powell Theatre at San Diego State. La also took major steps in solidifying the organization's RSO (Recognized Student Organization) status. Though Peter Cirino has been adviser since the club's inception, Stuart Voytilla was later added as a second adviser.
In December 2018, Jerry La stepped down as President on December 10, 2018, making then-Vice President Grimm the acting President of Film Society. La served nearly 2 terms as President. An election was held the following week as scheduled, and Anthony Grimm was unanimously elected the club's 4th President for the following semester, and Erin Martinez was elected the 5th Vice President and the first female to serve as such in the club's history. Grimm and Martinez selected a cabinet that consisted of the most females in the executive council than ever before. The selection of the cabinet made Claire Cerda, the current Chief-of-Staff, and Matthew Looney, former Marketing Director and current Social Media Liaison, the longest serving members of the Film Society Leadership in its history. Grimm and Martinez assumed their respective offices on January 8, 2019 and are currently serving their first and only term, as they will depart after their graduation in Spring 2019.
